While the south zone education department has issued a circular for all aided and unaided schools to celebrate Teacher's Day on September 5 as per instructions of the National Foundation for Teacher's Welfare (NFTW), Delhi, institutions in the city claim that following the notice may not be possible since the day has been declared a holiday for Ganesh Chaturthi.
Most of the schools have declared a five-day holiday for the Ganesh festival. The instruction from NFTW includes organising sports activities like friendly cricket matches, programmes to honour teachers, talks to bring out the key role of teachers as builders of the coming generation.
Prashant Redij, principal of a school in the western suburbs, said, "I have not received any such circular yet and even if there are instructions to celebrate Teacher's Day on September 5, it may not be possible as Ganesh festival is also starting same day and schools have declared holiday. We may celebrate Teachers Day with students before that at our level."
Uday Nare, a teacher from Hansraj Morarji Public School, said, "The education department has already asked schools to give five days of holiday to children. In that case, how can it be possible to celebrate Teachers Day on September 5?"
