Sources in the Mumbai police have stated that the sanctions imposed by the United States on “drug traffickers” Tiger Memon and Chhota Shakeel - both close aides of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim - have come too late.

Moreover, they said, the sanctions will not put much pressure on Pakistan. “Dawood was termed a global terrorist by the US, what difference did it make?” said a senior police officer.

Apropos the question of whether the movements of Dawood and his aides would be restricted after the sanctions, the officer said, “D-company aides holed up in Pakistan are provided security and shelter by Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s spy agency. Dawood and his aides can easily obtain bogus passports issued by Pakistan authorities and travel abroad,” said a police officer.

“What we have been saying about Dawood and his aides about their involvement in criminal activities for the past many years is being recognised now at the international level,” said additional commissioner of police, crime, Deven Bharti.
