A sailor working on INS Tabar was found hanging on the naval ship on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old CK Nayakulu, 25.

According to the police, the alleged suicide took place around 4 am when the ship was halting at the Naval Dockyard in South Mumbai. They said Nayakulu hanged himself with a rope.

The alleged suicide was reported around an hour later after a night guard spotted Nayakulu hanging on the rod of the ceiling and alerted senior officers. While the sailor was taken to the Ashwini hospital, naval doctors declared him brought dead.

The body has been sent to St. George hospital for postmortem, said the police.

Nayakulu is a native of Andhra Pradesh and navy officers have informed his family members, who are yet to reach Mumbai.

The police have registered an accidental death report and are conducting the preliminary investigation. "So far, we have not found any suicide note," said a senior officer from Colaba police station.

"Nayakulu was a sailor in INS Tabar and he hanged himself on board. A Naval inquiry has been instituted in the matter," said N Vispute, Navy spokesperson.
