Robber held after victim runs into him day later

The Dharavi police have arrested a married couple for robbing a 38-year-old man last week. The arrest was more a matter of chance than police investigation, as the victim ran into one of the attackers a day after the robbery took place. He nabbed him and handed him over to the police.

The two accused have been identified as Furkhan Yakub Sayyad, 25, and Reshma Sayyad, 22, residents of Wadala.

They abducted the victim, Badri Alam Farukh Khan, last Saturday night when he was talking on his mobile phone by a roadside in Sion.

They came in a taxi and stopped by the victim on the pretext of asking for directions. When Khan went close to the taxi, the two dragged him in, robbing him of Rs55,000 in cash, his ATM card, and his mobile phone.

They forced the taxi driver to follow their orders at knifepoint before throwing out the victim in Wadala. The couple got out of the taxi and fled, as did the taxi. Hence, Khan could not note down its registration number.

The next day, Khan went to the same area in Wadala to meet a friend. While he was talking to his friend, he spotted his attacker in a mobile phone shop nearby. Khan and his friend nabbed him and handed him over to the Dharavi police station.

“The couple has been arrested in a case of theft and they have confessed to the crime,” said senior police inspector Hemant Patil of the Dharavi police station.
