We talked about winning people your way with a powerful, confident and warm smile last time. Let us look at the next big step in building winning relations with people.
In our professional and personal lives, we are introduced to many people. The beginning of a new relation starts with an important ritual - getting to know the person’s name. The ability to remember people’s names is an incredibly useful skill in business and social interactions.
Everyone struggles with remembering names. When we meet a person we are so engaged in other visual details like personality, gestures, etiquette and the subject of discussion that the name is simply lost in the clutter. Trust me, remembering names correctly can prove to be a
turning point for boosting your interpersonal skills. It can add a magical touch to your relations at work and in social circles.
One interesting example is that of Jim Farley. Jim never had great education yet at the age of 46, four colleges had honored him with degrees and he had become chairman of the Democratic National Committee and Postmaster General of the United States. He played a key role in 1932 when he helped put Franklin D Roosevelt in the White House by successfully managing his campaign. What was this unique ability which made Jim so successful?
It was his uncanny ability to remember people’s names and build rapport.Someone once asked him, “Is it true that you can call 10,000 people by their first names? “ He said, “No. I can call 50,000 people by their first names.”
If you forget or worse still, misspell or mistake somebody’s name you can be sure you have lost valuable points! You may be eager to learn some of the tricks used by charismatic leaders, top businessmen, highly successful salesmen and popular public relation officers to remember names correctly. Let me share some of these tricks with you,
The FACE method:
Benjamin Levy, author of Remember Every Name Every Time, advocates the method: “focus, ask, comment and
employ.”
Focus: Lock in on the person’s face.
Ask: Enquire which version he prefers, for example “Is it Raj or Rajvardhan ?”
Comment: Say something about the name and build a cross-reference for it in your head, for
Example, “We had a music teacher by the name of
Rajvardhan.”
Employ: Put the name to use - “So what brings you to Pune, Raj?” or “Would you prefer tea or coffee, Raj?”
This method works wonders and seldom fails. You literally cement the name in your memory by creating so many references and reminders during the conversation. If you have missed the name in the course of the conversation do not hesitate to catch up by saying “ It has been such a pleasure talking to you and I have forgotten your name while we chatted merrily ! “ Take the name once again and start using it from here till you part ways.
Locate the trigger
Indians have a lot of common names. Find out something to go with the name which will help you remember it. A visual that goes with the name , a celebrity with a similar name, a friend or relative with the same name - just find that trigger which can help you the next time you meet the person. For example , Omkar can be remembered with a visual of “Om” , Amit can be remembered with the celebrity Big B, common names are best remembered by linking them to friends or relatives with the same name.
Exaggerate sounds
Tina can be remembered very easily , if you mentally repeat it as Teeeeee Naaaaa. Same applies for Aneeeetaaaa, Suuumeeet etc. You will register the name in your mind strongly while playing with the sound of the name.
Chunking names
It is easier to remember the name by slicing it into manageable parts and inserting memory clues. For example , Simran can be chunked into “Sim-card-ran”. Attach the Simcard chunk visually to the person and you will never forget Simran all your life ! Sounds a little absurd ? Well if Simran is just a friend this may sound absurd. But if Simran is PA to the vice president you are scheduled to meet for your next business deal then yes , you may want to use this tip to be able to greet her and delight her with your skills.
Repeat difficult names
Asking a person “ How do you pronounce your name correctly ?” Or “How do you spell your name ?” “Did I pronounce it correctly ?” or “ Can you repeat that?” should help you register and lock difficult names firmly in your memory.
