At a time when all electricity suppliers are fighting tooth and nail against power theft and other losses, the Reliance Energy Limited (REL) has managed to considerably bring down the losses with help of Global Information System (GIS).

Though the company has attributed the reduction in losses to the system, the officials said it was very difficult to identify the exact number of power thieves nabbed with the help of GIS. However, the system has proven to be highly effective against power losses and detection of power theft.

As a part of the system, the entire network right from the generation and purchase point to end consumers is connected through GIS, enabling the utility to monitor the network. The system works on a simple principle of monitoring power supply and expected revenue from the same.

“All the sub stations in the distribution area are linked with the system and power supply to these sub stations is monitored. When ever there is difference between purchase and expected revenue, we can virtually pinpoint the spot where losses are taking place,” said a REL official.

Power theft in Mumbai is low as compared to other parts of the state because of underground cable network. Total technical and commercial (T&C) losses in Mumbai are expected to be around 12%. However, REL has brought it down to 10.25%.

The company implemented the system in New Delhi in 2003-2004 when T&C losses were at 50%, and at the end of the year 2008, it has come down to less than 25%, the official added. At a total capital investment of around Rs 25 crore, power suppliers can reap the enormous benefits.

However, the officials at Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) said the system could be effective where the consumers are in a concentrated area. “In case of MSEDCL, which caters to consumers spread over 3.16 lakh square km, the system might not be as effective as in Mumbai,” the official said.
