Reducing carbon footprints, 10 e-buses hit Mumbai's roads

Reducing its carbon footprints, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) inducted 10 new electric buses to its crew on Monday. For a long time now, these electric buses were lying in Dharavi depot for getting registered with Tardeo RTO. These buses are the first lot to be procured under wet-lease where drivers shall be appointed by the private contractor.

On Monday Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena leader inaugurated these buses, of which 6 buses are air-conditioned. The BEST got these buses under the FAME scheme.

According to sources, the buses will ply between Sion-Mulund from today. Soon, they will ply on Sion-Thane, Sion-Trombay and Chunabhatti-Tardeo roots. Under this Central government-funded scheme, the BEST will get 30 more e-buses in the next couple of months. In total, 20 AC and 20 non-AC electric buses will be introduced in the city.

With the addition of the new buses, BEST will able to launch point to point service in some parts of the city. BEST has planned to expand its fleet to 6,000 in first phase. Thackeray suggested BEST should ensure that the new buses should be charged using renewable energy sources like solar power.

"Let's make BEST and Mumbai 100% pollution-free," said Uddhav Thackeray.

These buses have internal combustion engines that would enhance its working. The capacity of each of these buses are 31 passengers. It can ply at a speed of 70kmph while it's batteries need to be recharged after every 170-180 kmph. It has fireproof lithium-ion batteries that can be recharged within 3-4 hours.

Yogesh Sagar, minister of state for the urban development department, suggested appointing two transport experts and financial experts in BEST, who will allow the undertaking to plan it's routes and finances better.

The BEST will spend Rs 55.71 per km on electric buses and Rs 51.75 per km on non-AC electric buses.
