A 21-year-old allegedly 'jumped' into the sea after running away from the custody of Gorai police when he was taken out of the lock-up for medical examination. The youth was arrested for in a rape case.

According to Gorai police, Salman Patel,21, was booked by the Gorai police for rape and POCSO on March 12. Patel was held by the Aarey police and was handed over to the Gorai police for further investigations.

On Monday, after the arrest, the accused was kept in the police lock-up and on Tuesday, at around 2.30 am, he was taken out for medical examination. Patel managed to escape from the police custody and at around 7.30 am, after the police received a tip-off that Patel was hiding at the Gorai beach, a team of police officers rushed to nab him but Patel jumped into the sea and drowned.

"One of our policeman even jumped into the waves to save Patel but he was washed deep inside and drowned,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone XI) Vikram Deshmane.

"His body surfaced on Tuesday evening and we have registered a case of accidental death in this regard," said Deshmane. "We have also booked him for escaping from the police custody after putting him under arrest," he added.
