The police arrested a gang of three, including a physically challenged person and recovered 223 expired coupons.
The Kalyan railway police on Thursday arrested a gang of three persons including a physically handicapped person, for duping the railway administration and commuters by selling expired/used railway coupons, to railway commuters for the past eight months.
“We have arrested Rajesh Jadhav, 32; Somnath Singh, 55 and Ghanshyam Yadav, 23, for cheating,” said senior police inspector Ashok Jadhav and added that among the arrested persons, Singh is suffering from polio on his left hand.
Yadav, one of the accused works as a mechanic with Shalimar Company which repairs and maintains the coupon vending machines installed at the railway stations. The police also recovered 223 expired railway coupons in Rs5, Rs3, Rs2 and Rs1, denominations; two blades, a polish paper, a WR and a CR expired smart card and cash worth Rs1,350 from them, added Jadhav.
Describing their modus operandi, sub inspector SN Pednekar of Kalyan railway police station said, “They used to collect the expired/used railway coupons from the railway station premises. Then Jadhav and Singh used to erase the dates with the help of blade and polish paper and re-sell it to commuters during peak hours at Kalyan station. Yadav, who is mechanic, helped them to get fresh date by using the vending machines.
However, one alert commuter Rajen Menon who was waiting for his friend outside the Kalyan railway ticket booking office, noticed the three accused loitering near the ticket vending machine. One of them, Yadav, was repairing the machine while his associates were selling coupons to commuters. Menon suspected foul play and contacted the Railway Police Helpline. On receiving the information, API Sanjay Gidde of Railway Police Helpline contacted the Kalyan railway police station and the trio was arrested.
