In a first, a national political party wrote to an LGBT trust seeking their inputs for their manifesto. Congress MP Sushmita Dev, who is a part of the manifesto committee wrote to the city-based LGBT trust, Humsafar Trust, asking the members to provide their inputs so that they can be kept in mind while on formulating policies for the LGBT community.

The move comes after the Supreme Court in September 2018, read down section 377 which criminalized sex among two consenting adults of the same sex.

Earlier, most political parties refrained from being part of the discussion concerning the sexual minorities. It was only Aam Aadmi Party that took up the LGBT cause during 2014 general election.

Confirming the same Vivek Raj Anand, Chief Executive Officer of Humsafar Trust said, "We have received an email from the Congress asking us to provide them with inputs that could help them formulate policies for the LGBT community."

The letter even asked the trust, to depute a few representatives who would like to meet the manifesto committee and discuss issues concerning the community in a closed-door meeting.

When contacted Dev, she said that the decision was taken in order to understand the issues pertaining to the LGBT community.

"We did write to The Humsafar Trust seeking their inputs. Every individual of the society needs to be represented. Social justice is the need of the hour. There are specific issues concerning the community, we want to discuss them, and put forth a plan. We have written to several institutions, and have received inputs too," said Dev.

On Saturday Queer and Political, an activity by the Queer community to understand the political thinking of the community came out with a survey report. In this having uniform civil code, laws for equal rights, marriage, inheritance, adoption topped the list.
