An NGO 'Shivdhyas' dedicated to creating awareness about historical forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had organised a one-day picnic on Sunday for school children to the historic Shivneri fort, which is the birth place of Shivaji. An expert in the field Dr Sachin Joshi, who is working for the state government's fort conservation committee highlighted the salient features of the fort.

Speaking to DNA, Joshi said that this was a welcome initiative which helps inculcate love and sensitisation towards forts among school children. He added that instead of just informing the students about the history of the fort, other important elements regarding the architecture and archeology were also told.

Sanket Subhedar, one of the founders of Shivdhyas told DNA that while foreigners are studying Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his forts, there is a need to take our school children to historical forts and that is the reason this picnic was organised.

Gauri Bhalerao, a Class 9 student said that the school had held special classes despite their being on a break, in preparation for a quiz on Shivneri that was held at the fort. She sad that it helped them understand the fort, seeing it in person in addition to studying about it.
