Seventeen-year-old Prashant Suresh Shinde allegedly committed suicide by setting himself ablaze by pouring kerosene at his residence on Wednesday afternoon in Sevak Colony on University of Pune campus.

According to the police, the incident took place when the victim’s parents had gone out. The incident came to light when the neighbours saw smoke coming out from the room.
The police said Shinde’s father is working in the UOP in the security department while his mother is working in Symbiosis College. Prashant was their only child and was studying in standard X. The reason for the suicide is not known, the police said.
Teacher accused of rape arrested
Prabhakar Burse (35), the Zilla Parishad school teacher who had allegedly raped a 12-year-old school girl in Kaman village school in Rajgurnagar (DNA, Dec 20) was arrested by the Khed police on Wednesday night. Burse had absconded since Monday. Police sub inspector Seema Dhakne told DNA that a police party had gone to Kalyan, the hometown of Burse on Monday, from where they got a tip-off about his whereabouts.
Youth’s body recovered
An unidentified youth, suspected to be a pickpocket, was found dead in Aga Khan Lane near Woodland Hotel on Connaught Road on Wednesday morning.
According to the Bund Garden police, the deceased, who might have been hit by a stone, died of severe head injuries at 8.30 am on Wednesday. The victim’s body was sent to the Sassoon General Hospital for post-mortem. Meanwhile, police inspector (crime) Sudheer Kate said, “The identity of the victim is yet to be established.”
Man held for youth’s murder
The police on Wednesday arrested a man accused of murdering 22-year-old Sagar Dipak Ranpise at Shantinagar Yerawada around 11:30 pm on Tuesday.
The accused Harishchandra Paltu Nanak (40) and his son Udal Harishchandra Nanak, residents of Yerawada, have been accused of killing Ranpise with sharp weapons.
A complaint in this regard was registered by the victim’s relative Jyoti Dipak Ranpise
at the Vishrantwadi police station.
According to the police, on Tuesday night, the father and son duo assaulted Ranpise and his friend Vivek alias Baba Bhosale with sharp weapons. Later, Ranpise and Bhosale were rushed to Sassoon hospital with severe head injuries. While Bhosale is still undergoing treatment,
Ranpise died on his way to the hospital.
The police said Harishchandra was arrested from the Khadki railway station while his son Udal was still at large.
