The Traffi-i-cop initiative of the Pune Traffic Police has been selected as one of the 118 best practices in the country by the central government’s Governance Knowledge Centre (GKC).

Launched in November 20, 2009, Traffi-i-cop is a software application installed on a BlackBerry mobile device, which allows police officers to access vehicle and license details of offenders on the device in real time and see the offender’s past history in
order to issue penalties.

Addressing media persons in the city on Thursday, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Manoj Patil, claimed that the Traffi-i-cop project had been ranked 17th in the 118 best practices by the GKC.  Patil, however, could not reveal the top 10 best practices.

Patil said, “We are extremely happy. This will definitely encourage us to work better in the future.”

Under the pilot project, a total of 50 BlackBerry devices were given to the traffic police. The initiative has not only succeeded in registering 8.36 lakh offences but also in suspending 2,400 licences, identifying 950 regular offenders and tracing 200 stolen
vehicles.
