In the wake of a high alert sounded in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, the Pune police are on their toes to avert any untoward incident on Christmas and New Year in the city.
Deputy commissioner of police Makrand Ranade (special branch) said three additional commissioners of police, 10 deputy commissioners of police, 400 police officers and 600 policemen are on special duty during the festivities.
“This will be the first Christmas and New Year celebrations after the German Bakery bomb blast, so we are not taking any chances. Moreover, we are pressing into service 20 striking forces, six quick response teams (QRTs), six bomb disposal squad (BDS) vans and state reserve police force,” he said.
Ranade said policemen would be posted on December 24 at various churches in the city where people gather in large numbers for prayers.
Malls, five-star hotels, the airport, railway stations and bus stands will be under strict surveillance. “We will be using cameras in crowded places in the city,” Ranade added.
