Several students at the University of Mumbai protested on the varsity’s Kalina campus on Tuesday against the increase in examination fees. The varsity recently increased the examination fees for PG courses from Rs 650 to Rs 1,360.

Students also protested on issues ranging from lack of infrastructure at the varsity to poor implementation of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), which was introduced last year.

“The university has communicated the decision to the students just a few days before the exams begin. Despite protests in the past, the administration has not done anything to reduce the burden of fees. On the one hand, fees have increased while on the other, there is poor infrastructure and several academic issues that students face like poor implementation of the CBCS with most departments giving hardly any options to students,” said Vivek D’Souza, a second year MA student of Political Science.

On Wednesday, students at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences(TISS) have called for a strike across all its campuses against the institute’s policy to slash the fee waiver for students . As per the institute’s recent admission notification, SC students who would be admitted to the institute would have to bear their hostel and dining expenses as the institute would no longer continue to bear the same.

“The institute has decided to cut down on hostel and mess waiver for many students citing lack of funds. This would lead to a complete erasure of students from underprivileged backgrounds coming to the institute” said an MPhil student from the institute.

Students said the institute administration got the posters of the protest removed from the campus.
