The state government adopted a resolution on June 1 stating that families of policemen killed while fighting crime or in operations against Naxals or terrorists will avail of the deceased policeman’s salary that will keep increasing (according to seniority) till the date of the deceased’s scheduled retirement. The family will then be entitled to pension calculated on the basis of salary last drawn.

“In this new financial assistance, even in the remaining tenure of the deceased officer, it will be considered as if he is still serving and his family will be paid salary whenever there is promotion of his batch, assuming as if the policemen is himself alive,” the resolution stated.

Previously, if a policeman died on duty, his family would be entitled to avail of the last salary drawn by him/her till scheduled retirement (without any increase due to seniority) and pension was calculated according to that salary.

The assistance covers those policemen who lost their lives while averting dacoities, curbing organised crime and helping during emergencies.

“This new plan will provide good financial help for families of martyrs and will enable them to live better lives,” said a police sub-inspector, who refused to be identified.
