Deputy Inspector General of Police Sanjay Barve, who was part of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which investigated Abdul Karim Telgi’s multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, has been awarded the President’s Police Medal.
A 1987 batch IPS officer, Barve worked as assistant superintendent of police in the naxal-infested Gadchiroli district and deputy commissioner of police in various zones in Mumbai. He also did a stint with the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai police.
He also served as police commissioner in Solapur for a brief period and played a key role in the development of Mumbai Police Gymkhana at Marine Drive. Barve, who was till recently DIG (State Reserve Police Force) has been shifted to DIG (Establishment).
He is being credited for maintaining communal harmony when 11 dalits were killed in police firing, which took place on July 11, 1997, after Dr Ambedkar’s statue at Ramabhai Ambedkar colony in Ghatkopar (east) was disfigured.
