Wanted accused Sandeep Chhabra alias Pawan Jaipur had been collecting vital information from CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan through Vindoo Dara Singh. All this while he was hiding in Dubai after the crackdown by the Delhi and Mumbai police.
The Mumbai crime branch officials learnt this while investigating into the Indian Premier League betting case.
The police have mentioned in the charge sheet that Pawan had been asking Vindoo, in a recorded conversation, to collect information about a match from Meiyappan.
According to the police, on May 18, a match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings was affected by rains. Around 10.03pm, Pawan made inquiries with Vindoo asking him to check with Meiyappan whether the match would start. The police have recorded this conversation between Pawan and Vindoo. Each side had played only eight overs because of the downpour.
“Both Vindoo and Pawan knew about the crackdown of Mumbai and Delhi police on those involved in IPL matches betting and spot-fixing while having the conversation. They were probably confident that they would not be traced and so they continued discussing betting over phone,” said a crime branch officer, privy to the investigations.
