MUMBAI
At a recent crime conference attended by senior officials, the two got into a heated argument that lasted 5 minutes.
A senior police inspector from a city police station was taken to task by Mumbai police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal at a recent crime conference following complaints received against the inspector for allegedly demanding money from diamond traders.
According to police sources, at the crime conference that was held on Monday by Mumbai police chief Sanjeev Dayal, DB Marg police station’s senior police inspector NR Mali was the centre of talk.
Officers of senior police inspector rank and above attend the conference.
The sources said that Dayal was furious and told Mali that he had received several complaints from diamond merchants that the inspector demands money from the traders involved in cheating cases.
Sources further claimed that some times money is also sought from victims for registering the First Information Report or for recovery of stolen goods from the arrested accused.
A senior police inspector, who attended the conference, confirmed the heated argument between Dayal and Mali. The discussion, said the officer, lasted for more than five minutes wherein Dayal said that such things should be stopped immediately.
He also told Mali’s superior officers that it is their duty to ensure such things do not take place.
Dayal also visited the office of additional police commissioner, south region office, on Tuesday and again discussed this issue with Mali, sources said. An IPS official from South Mumbai also confirmed this.
“We do receive such complaints and discuss them with our officers. Yes, complaints were received against Mali and we are dealing with it in our own way. Mali has been heading the DB Marg police station since past three years. These are administrative matters and we are dealing with it,” Sanjeev Dayal told DNA.
When contacted, Mali denied the allegations, “This is not true,” he said.
