Daily supply of onions down by 30%, claim Nashik traders.
The wholesale price of onions at the Lasalgaon market in Nashik dropped by Rs1,000 per quintal on Tuesday.
At the Lasalgaon agriculture produce marketing committee (APMC), onions fetched a high rate of Rs5,200 per quintal as against Rs6,299 on Monday.
Never before have onions been sold at such high prices in the 63-year-old market. At Wambori, the wholesale market drop in the prices of onions was more significant. The commodity, which was sold at an-all time high of Rs15,200 per quintal dropped to Rs8,000 per quintal on Tuesday.
Apparently, unseasonal rains in November damaged about 50% of the winter crop of onions, reducing the quantity of its arrival in wholesale markets in Nashik and Ahmednagar.
“The daily supply in the wholesale market in Nashik has been reduced by about 30%,” claimed traders.
However, the vice president of the National Agriculture Federation for Export Development (Nafed), Changdeorao Holkar, blamed a section of traders and agents for the sudden rise in the price of onions.
“No doubt there is a shortage of good variety of onions in the market. But traders and agents have created the impression of a huge scarcity and are making quick money,” he alleged.
