However, overall, it wasn’t a good result as out of the 32,536 candidates who appeared for it across India in November 2013, only 1,013 (3.11%) managed to pass. This season’s pass percentage is much lower as compared with that of previous ones.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants India (ICAI) declared the results. The top three rank-holders are from Akot (Maharashtra), Delhi and Kolkata, respectively.

As per statistics obtained from ICAI, the pass percentage has sharply declined over the past three years — May 2011 saw 20.5% passing, May 2012 saw 16% and, in the previous season of exam (May 2013), a little more than 10% passed.

Students, however, have blamed the ICAI for deliberately failing them and allowing lesser number of CAs to enter the market due to skewed job demands. “Many bright candidates failed due to ICAI’s faulty policy. The body is known for passing candidates as per industry demands. As the job market is down this year, they have deliberately failed 97% candidates,” a candidate from Pune alleged.

Some students said that the papers were deliberately kept lengthy and marking was made tough to keep the pass percentage low.

A Mumbai candidate, who failed, told dna, “While the financial reporting paper was extremely lengthy and required at least four hours to solve instead of the allocated three, tough marking was applied to the management accounting paper. Most of my friends have failed in these two.”

ICAI president Subodh Agrawal was unavailable for comment.
