Just about 24 hours ahead of the court verdict on the Ayodhya issue, the ruling Congress-NCP leadership in the state reckons that the political stakes are higher for them than for the Shiv Sena or BJP.
However, they face a dilemma: How to make a clear distinction between 1992 and 2010?
“The socio-political ramifications in 1992-93, post-Babri demolition, saw the Congress become a prisoner of BJP’s Ayodhya movement. The then leadership in the state also failed to check the law and order situation,” said a senior Congress cabinet minister.
However, he added that in 2010, the Congress is at an advantageous position and the BJP on the back-foot. “As far as law and order is concerned, it will test the administrative abilities of the Democratic Front government.”
The images of 1992-93 riots are so deeply ingrained in the minds of the Congress leaders that they have resorted to appeals and prayers to ensure that there is no law and order problem in the state. Chief minister Ashok Chavan has decided to lead from the front, overseeing the deployment of forces to ensure that there are no administrative lapses.
While the BJP and Sena are ready with their plan of action depending on the verdict, the Congress-NCP is engaged in a fire-fighting exercise even before the outcome.
The allies believe that they have to be on guard as the verdict could be the beginning of a political trigger for generating unrest if they are found faltering.
Almost half a dozen senior cabinet ministers have rescheduled their administrative work to ensure they are in their respective districts to maintain communal harmony.
NCP general secretary Gurunath Kulkarni said, “The problem is that we are mixing a land title dispute with politics of Ram temple and Babri Mosque.”
A former lawyer maintained: “The delay in the court decision is not going to resolve the issue. Political parties will have to come to terms with reality. The decision cannot be tampered to suit individual political interests.”
The top BJP leadership is exercising caution to ensure that they do not revert to the old tried-and-tested Hinduism theme without sensing the public pulse.
BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde said, “Our position on Ayodhya remains unchanged and consistent. We are closely watching the developments and also ensuring communal harmony.”
