Navroz signifying the Parsi New Year is a day of feasting for India's women Rugby team captain Vahbiz Bharucha. Back from a family lunch when we spoke to her, Vahbiz fondly looks forward to the 'new day' year after year. In quintessential Parsi humour Vahbiz quips, "I am back from a family get-together where there was silence and we have just been eating."

The elders celebrate the onset of the winter equinox by visiting the agiary in the morning, Vahbiz explains. It is a time for reconnecting and bonding over Parsi culinary delicacies like Patra ni Machi, Sali Boti, Dhansak and berry pulao. What follows this sumptuous spread is a big fat Jalebi desert. The big jalebis are made specially for the occasion and distributed to friends and loved ones.

Vahbiz confesses that her sports diet goes out of the window and one has to eat this heavy, burp inducing spread with moderation.

Zubin Zaveri runs Cafe 792 in the Dadar parsi colony which gives a Cafe and takeaway platform to local parsi and non Parsee culinary talent. The day for Zubin is to make pious resolutions and prayer along with celebration.

Zubin explains in detail the traditional spread that his brethren love to feast on Navroz. Patra ni Machi made in green sauces is a constant however the sauce can alter to a white sauce as well. The Chicken or Mutton Palao or rice is served with generous servings of the Dhansak Dal served with Salli Chicken or Kid Gosht.

"The significance of Navroz is the heralding of new year after 10 days of prayer. The last ten days are in remembrance of the departed souls. It heralds a new beginning for us. The mandatory thing is to visit a fire temple," explains Zaveri.

Evenings are spent going to watch a good old Parsi play an industry which also has seen a revival of sorts in the recent days, explains Zaveri.
