The number of potholes in Mumbai that are required to be filled by the government is decreasing. This is what appears to be the case as per the information provided by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the state assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to a starred question in the state assembly over potholes in the city, Fadnavis informed that a tender of Rs 9.30 crore was floated for filling potholes, while Rs 90 crore were meant for other related works such as resurfacing and allied activities.

He informed that in 2014-15, there were 14,455 potholes while in 2015-16 there were 5,316 potholes, for which a tender was floated. He informed that during 2016-17, a tender was brought out for 4,478 potholes and during 2017-18 it was floated for 4,044 potholes.

The motion was moved by MLA Nassem Khan from Mumbai. MLAs Santosh Danve, Narayan Kute, Vijay Vadettiwar, Amit Deshmukh and Balasaheb Thorat had asked the question related to this. Naseem Khan, Prithviraj Chavan and Ajay Choudhary asked supplementary questions after Minister of State (MoS) for Urban Development Dr Ranjit Patil gave a reply.

Stating that since the hot mix cannot be used during rains, BMC has started using cold mix since last year and it has started its own cold mix project.

Fadnavis informed that out of the total road length of 1,941 kms in Mumbai, 129 kms of road is made of tar where one finds the issue of potholes. He informed that roads collectively measuring 605 kms fall in defect liability period and responsibility of filling potholes on these roads is of the contractors who are doing it. On the remaining roads, filling of potholes is done by bringing out tenders and as such one was floated for Rs 9.30 crore.

Replying to a supplementary question by former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on quality of asphalt cold mix, Fadnavis informed that BMC has last year tested the cold mix and a pilot plant has been set up, a report would be sought on whether the potholes filled up with cold mix remain intact even after monsoon is over and since it is being used for the first time, a report would also tell whether it is effective.
