MUMBAI: An inmate of the Central Prison in south-central Mumbai was killed and three were injured in a clash between two rival groups inside the high security jail on Saturday.

John D'Souza, an undertrial, was killed while three have been admitted to JJ Hospital following the clash at barrack No 4 in the jail, Deputy Commissioner of Police Panjabrao Ugle said.

"We suspect the clash broke out as one group of robbers tipped off the police regarding activities of the rival group. Further details will be available only after the interrogation of the three injured," Ugle said.

He denied that members of any organised crime syndicate like the Dawood or Chhota Rajan gangs, were involved in the clash.

The jail on Arthur Road in Mumbai houses over 1,500 undertrials, including members of the Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan gangs and persons convicted in the 1993 serial blasts case.
