In a good news for thousands of passengers taking long-distance trains, the Railways have finally decided to allow parking spaces for mobile aggregators and radio cabs who take bookings over apps, outside railway stations. This is something similar to how the airport has separate counters and parking stands for these cab operators.

The Central Railway has called for tenders for the project, which they expect interested parties to submit by April 17. In the first phase, these parking lots have been planned at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. Central Railway officials said that at CSMT station, this parking lot will be created next to platform no. 18 near P D'Mello road.

"We have identified space of around 180 sq meters where these app-based cabs will be parked and counters too would be set up. Even the regular cool cabs and black and yellow taxis can be parked here," said a CR official.

The parking lots will be established on trial basis for a period of six months at a cost of Rs 30.78 lakh. There is an entrance from P D'Mello road to go to platform no. 18 of CSMT. This is the same space where the CR authorities are also planning a heritage gulley and a Shivaji statue with fort replicas.

At Kurla LTT, this taxi stand for app-based operators has been proposed near the old station building. The parking lot will lead to Tilak Nagar railway station. Here, the proposed parking space for the different cab operators is larger than that at CSMT. It will be set up on 132 sq meters of land and will operate for six months at cost of Rs 23.08 lakh.

Currently, there are prepaid taxi stands that operate from different railway stations. These are operated by different unions. The demand for these prepaid stands has dropped, according to union members, as they claim that the tariff is more than regular metered cabs.
