Now, vehicle fitness test in two ticks

The state’s regional transport offices (RTO) on Wednesday streamlined the process of the inspection timings for fitness tests of vehicles, by actually breaking down the various examinations into minutes for better and speedier implementation.
The Bombay high court had earlier passed an order directing the transport department not to issue a fitness certificate to any vehicle without tests as per norms, given the state’s high rate of road fatalities.
Maharashtra transport commissioner VN More, in a notification issued on Wednesday, stated that following the high court directives, a committee was set up that came up with certain recommendations which the department would try and implement, given the sheer number of vehicles that a vehicle inspector has to attend.
An average motor vehicle inspector productively works for seven hours a day, which can be used to complete maximum vehicle inspections.
A standard table has now been formulated for various kinds of mandatory tests that are conducted on all types of vehicles. According to it, the time taken to inspect vehicles would vary from 10 minutes to 24 minutes, depending on the type of vehicles.
The notification said that the aforementioned process was the best possible way to get the certification done, given the lack of proper equipment and staff.  
Fitness tests done by motor vehicle inspectors include various examinations, such as brake test, inspecting headlight, safety equipment, tests of various parts and going through the documents of the vehicle. They will now be monitored by senior officials, if required, to ensure quality.
All public utility and transport vehicles, including taxis, auto rickshaws, school buses, trucks and tankers have to renew their fitness certificates once in every two years.
