Your long wait for a driving licence will finally become a thing of the past from next week.
Your long wait for a driving licence will finally become a thing of the past from next week. The state transport department’s much-delayed scheme of sending driving licences by post will be launched by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, who also handles the Transport portfolio, on Thursday, in an official inaugural function at the Sahyadri guest house.
State transport commissioner Dilip Jadhav, while speaking to DNA, explained that software issues and other technical issues had held up the scheme for several months and that led to the delays in the initiation of the scheme. However, he added, all such issues have now been taken care of and implementation of the long-delayed scheme can be started as soon as the launch takes place.
Apart from ensuring convenience for the licence applicants, this scheme will also help curb the illegal practice of fake licences as, according to the official belief, the address of the applicant will be confirmed by posting the licence.
This way, the menace of illegal driving schools and licence agents is expected to be curtailed, if not contained. The applicants will be charged an additional Rs50 for the service and the licences are expected to be posted to the applicants in a maximum period of 7 days once the tests are done and the papers submitted.
