The luxury of having home-cooked food will no longer available to the inmates of Arthur Road, Taloja and Thane prisons. The prisons department has moved a proposal to the state government demanding the scraping of the facility for providing outside food to the inmates as it can prove dangerous in future.

Some of the famous inmates who have availed the facility of having outside food are encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma, gangsters Mustafa Dossa, Abu Salem, Arun Gawli and scamster Kashinath Tapuriah.

“Last week, I had sent a proposal to the state government stating that outside food should not be allowed to the inmates in the prisons as it can be misused in many ways, including bringing in poisonous substance mixed with the food,” said inspector general of police (prisons) Surender Kumar.

“I have cited as many as eight different reasons to the state government, asking them to move the higher courts in appealing against the outside cooked food facility for the inmates. Another factor is that the food supplier can also act as a messenger for the inmates,” added Kumar.

“The court has given orders to over 40 inmates who are lodged in Arthur, Thane and Taloja jails to allow them home cocked or hotel food. Good quality food and sufficient food are served to the inmates in jails, hence we do not think that some inmates should be given special treatment,” said jail authorities.

Will non-veg food make inmates violent, asks HC
What is the concept behind not providing non-veg food in prisons? What is the logic? There must be some scientific reason,” remarked Justice Ranjana Desai.

A division bench of the Bombay High Court was hearing a petition filed by 1993 blast convict Sardar Shahvali Khan seeking provision for additional cooked food in canteen which the inmates can buy.
Asking the state government to explain the “logic” behind such a decision, Justice Desai asked: “If they eat non-veg, will they become violent or what?”

Public prosecutor Pandurang Pol said they were not providing cooked food in jail canteen. “We cook the food in the kitchen. During nine festive days in a year like Bakri Id and Christmas, non-veg food is provided to the prisoners,” said Pol.

He said they were not providing cooked food in the canteen due to security reasons. “We cannot take chances with the security,” said Pol.

Justice Desai said, “We don’t expect you to compromise on the security aspect, but be reasonable to the prisoners.”

Farhana Shah and AMZ Ansari, advocates for the petitioner, said that the government’s claim that they are providing fruits to Muslims during Ramzan was false. Refuting the charges, Pol said they have been providing fruits and sheer-khurma to Muslims.

The court has asked the prison authorities to file an affidavit. “You (prisoners) must also realise you are in jail. You can’t get so much liberty. Be happy with what you are getting. Otherwise, there will be so many who would want to stay in jail only,” said Justice Desai.
