The Byculla Police are on the lookout for over a dozen Nigerian drug peddlers who allegedly pelted stones at residents of Byculla on Thursday night. The police have registered an FIR for rioting against the accused. However, when the police attempted to nab them, the Nigerians escaped.
According to the police, the accused sold drugs near the tracks between Sandhurst Road Railway Station and Byculla Railway Station. Reportedly, many customers brought drugs from them at night. The residents of Byculla started blocking the road, not allowing anyone looking to buy drugs to pass. The accused got frustrated when they started losing customers due to the residents' intervention, the police added.
According to the residents, the accused sold all kinds of drugs, including MD, Ganja and other narcotics substances at the tracks after 1 am and their customers created havoc in the area.
When the residents decided to intervene, around 12-18 Nigerians started pelting stones at their houses, besides abusing and manhandling a few persons.
"We have complained several times to the Railway Police Force (RPF) and the local police, but no action was taken. It had become a menace in the area. When pelting started on Thursday night, we informed the police. They couldn't catch the culprits as they arrived very late," Ameen Khan, a resident of the area, said.
"We have registered a case and our probe is on to arrest the accused. We have also deployed a police bandobast at the location since three days now," said Avinash Shingte, Senior Police Inspector of Byculla Police Station.
