New helpline launched to maintain peace for polls

In a bid to ensure peaceful Lok Sabha elections in the city, the Navi Mumbai police have launched a helpline number. This number can be used by the residents to directly contact the police, via short message service (SMS).

If any resident gets to know about any violation of code of conduct before or during the polls; or notices any prospective threat to the law and order situation in the city, one can send a text message to 9920091100. Police will coordinate with that person take to requisite measures as soon as possible.

Fateh Singh Patil, additional commissioner of police of Navi Mumbai, said, "This is one of our preventive measures to ensure that no untoward incidents take place during the elections. Cooperation of city residents is very important in terms of maintaining law and order situation. Therefore, we have launched this number so that they can contact us whenever they want." "However, we will reciprocate only to the text messages received on this number. We request the residents to contact their nearest police stations in case they have something to explain with details. Our teams will reach even in the remote areas, if we get to know about any unexpected situation at any point of time," he added.

Apart from this, police personnel in large numbers are doing a thorough check with the motorists on major roads of the city, to verifying their documents. "We are keeping a watch on mischief-mongers. Police presence on city roads will deter such people from committing crimes. Primarily, triple-carrying and four-wheelers bearing coloured film on windows are being checked," said Suresh Mengade, deputy commissioner of police (zone I).

The police said that those on two-wheelers with three riders or who have fancy number plates under the scanner. In most cases, those committing crimes on motorbikes use fake number plates.
