The Wagle Estate police arrested a 29-year-old man on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to rape an 11-year-old girl, who is his neighbour, at his residence.

The accused had lured the victim to his house on the pretext of sending her to a shop. But the victim's mother allegedly witnessed the crime, catching the man in a compromising position, and alerted other neighbhours.

The accused has been identified as Lakshman Mohbiya, a resident of Ambika Nagar in Thane.

"We have registered a case under Sections 376 (rape), 511 (attempt to commit crime), 354 (molestation), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences Act," said a police officer.
