The Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard has made preparations for this monsoon to meet contingencies both on and off-shore by positioning its teams at various locations within Mumbai as well as the coastal areas of the state.

"As the monsoons close the coast of Maharashtra, the armed forces have undertaken preparations to meet any eventuality," said commander Rahul Sinha, spokesperson of the Indian Navy.

According to him, the headquarters of the Western Naval Command has prepared to render assistance to the coastal states in general and Mumbaikars in particular.

There are multiple flood rescue teams with boats that have been positioned at various locations within Mumbai. This specialised teams have diving teams and will be based at the naval dockyard of Mumbai.

"Fast Interceptor Crafts and Immediate Support Vessels provide Search and Rescue cover within Mumbai Harbour. Helicopters are in readiness at INS Shikra and ships have been deployed off Mumbai coast," added Cdr Sinha.

Besides, the Joint Operation Centre (JOC), Mumbai operating under the Western Naval Command is also operating a Disaster Control Center which is working in close liaison with the disaster management unit of the civic body and that of the state through direct hotlines.
