Navi Mumbai saw around 27% rise in rape cases in the first eight months of 2016 in comparison to the corresponding period in the previous year. However, police claimed to have solved over 96 per cent cases.
According to statistics available with the crime branch of Navi Mumbai police, in the first eight months of 2016, a total 89 rape cases were registered while in 2015, in the same period, the figure was 70, a sharp rise of around 27 per cent. However, detection has also increased from last year by around 1 per cent. In 2015, of the 70 rape cases registered in first eight months, police succeeded in solving around 67 cases while in 2016, in the same period, of 89 cases registered, police solved 86 cases, with detection rate of 96 per cent.
However, the rise in rape cases in the city is worrisome. There has been a substantial rise in rape cases in 2016 compared to last year. According to statistics available with the crime branch, at least one rape case is registered in every three days or 11 rape cases in a month.
Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale said that the rise in rape cases can be attributed to various factors. “Approximately 85 per cent of cases registered are about love affairs or on the premise of false promise of marriage in which there is consensual sex, and later complaints are lodged with the police.” He added that in 95 per cent cases, the accused are known to the victims.
Meanwhile, molestation cases have dropped during this year. Between January and August 2016, a total 125 molestation cases were registered across 20 police stations in the city compared to 146 cases registered in the same duration last year. The police solved 118 and 141 molestation cases in 2016, and 2015 respectively.
