Of the total infant deaths in the civic-run and state-run hospitals across the city from 2014 until August 2017, over 7,117 deaths have occurred within 28 days of the birth. As per the Right To Information (RTI) response given by the civic-run hospitals, there are more number of postnatal deaths (less than 28 days of age) compared to perinatal deaths (less than one week old).

According to the data received by Chetan Kothari, RTI activist, within four years from 2014 to August 2017, the highest number of postnatal deaths have occurred in BYL Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central. There have been over 1,293 postnatal deaths in Nair Hospital which includes children born in the hospital and children who were born in other hospitals but were admitted here for further treatment.

Dr RN Bharmal, Dean of Nair Hospital, said, "The deaths are not due to lack of facilities but mainly due to overburden in the hospitals. We get double the number of cases from the actual capacity.
