The Chakan police on Thursday registered a case of murder against the administration and security guards of the Minda Corporation Company in the death of the company’s tempo driver.

The deceased, Shamrao Rangappa Girgite, of Alandi Road, Yerawada, worked as a tempo driver with the Minda Corporation in Nanekarwadi near Chakan. Girgite was allegedly caught stealing some goods of the company on December 12.

Police inspector Sushil Kadam of Chakan police station said, “Girgite and three other labourers of the company were allegedly caught with 1,946 boxes of electric switches worth Rs4.25 lakh in the wee hours of December 12.The security guards raised an alarm while they were fleeing with the boxes loaded in the tempo. All the four culprits were nabbed and beaten with thick rubber wires and wooden sticks by some employees of the company. Girgite and the other three were arrested on the same day and were produced before the Khed court. However, during the court proceedings Girgite collapsed due to high blood pressure. He was released on bail on December 14 on
medical grounds.”

Kadam said, “We have come to know that Girgite was admitted to the
Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial
Hospital (YCMH) in Pimpri on December 20 and died on Wednesday. Girgite’s son Sachin has registered a complaint
alleging that his father died due to
excessive beating by the company
employees. Our investigation is on
and we are yet to identify the
company employees.”
