After the Mumbra bypass was thrown open for vehicular traffic on Monday, Thane motorists experienced smooth travel after around 4 months of traffic woes. Many said that they saw their commute time reduce by 15-20 minutes as heavy vehicles stayed off from the city roads.

Relentless pressure from Thane citizens on the administrative authorities paid off as Mumbra bypass which was expected to open by September end, was thrown open on Monday. Residents not only heaved a sigh of relief but even found their commute time cut down by over 20 minutes.

"Today I reached my office in Bandra Kurla complex in 55 minutes. When the bypass was shut, it would take me one hour 45 minutes to reach office after wading through a sea traffic on bad roads," says Sushant Kumar, a resident of Hiranandani Estate, Thane. Kumar is one of the 100 residents who was a part of the campaign two weeks ago to express displeasure against traffic mismanagement in Thane.

Agreeing to Sushant's statement, another resident, Thomas Sequeira said, "Due to the shutdown and toll collection at Anandnagar tollnaka in Mulund east, the commute time increased to 45 minutes from 15 minutes."

However, residents say that the smooth functioning of traffic on Monday also might be due to Bharat Bandh called by INC. "Many vehicles may have stayed off the roads. We will know the real situation today when people go back to work," says Kasber Augustine, president of Thane Citizens Foundation (TCF).

Residents also say that the authorities should maintain the momentum gained in terms of the traffic situation in Thane. "To improve the situation, they should post traffic wardens at the beginning and end of flyovers," says Reny Varghese, a resident of Vijay Garden society, Ghodbunder road, Thane.

Mumbra bypass was shut for repairs since May 9, 2018, as a result, the traffic was diverted through Airoli and Shilfata.
