The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai police on Wednesday arrested two people — a woman and a teenager — after recovering 167 kilogram of cannabis, worth Rs 33.4 lakh, from their car. The vehicle has been seized.
The arrested people have been identified as Tausif Rafiq Khan, 19, a resident of Patel Apartment at Ghaswala Road in Nalasopara West, Palghar, and Parveen Kasamali Jafari, 40, a resident of Satyanagar at Saki Naka.
According to ANC Deputy Commissioner of Police Shivdeep Lande, they received credible information on Wednesday about the dealers' movement.
A team of officers from the Ghatkopar unit of ANC, led by Police Inspector Shashank Shelke, laid a trap near Tagore Nagar at Vikhroli and apprehended Khan and Jafari with the ganja. They were carrying the drug, which was stuffed in three gunny bags, in a silver Tata car (MH-03-BC-298) .
"The total cost of the seized material along with the vehicle is Rs 36.40 lakh. We have booked the accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. We are trying to ascertain the origin of the consignment and their client base," said an ANC officer.
In March earlier this year, the Anti-Narcotics Cell had busted an inter-state drug cartel and had seized 500 kilogram of cannabis which was worth Rs 1 crore in the international market.
The police had arrested Sanjay Minute, 36, the driver of the vehicle in which the drug was being transported, Nandlal Beldal, 55, the kingpin, and Kalu Mohite, 28.
The said contraband was brought from Naxal-affected Ganjam district in Odisha and nearby areas.
Beldal transported the consignment from Malegaon to Mumbai. "Wednesdays seizure is second biggest seizure of cannabis in recent times," said an ANC officer.
