Mumbai University to start colleges for poor students
The institutions will offer advanced courses like Bachelor of Mass Media, Management Studies, Library Science, and BSc in Information Technology and bio-technology.
For the first time, the University of Mumbai will set up two colleges so that economically backward students can get more access to degree education. The colleges, each of which will involve an expenditure of Rs8 crore, will be set up with the help of central and state government funds.
Dr Rajpal Hande, director, Board of College and University Development, said: “This is the first time the varsity is starting its own colleges. The colleges can start functioning next year.” The university will set up colleges in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, which come under the university’s jurisdiction. The Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University will start one in Raigad.
