The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested two persons from Andheri on Friday and recovered Rs 96,000 in fake currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination. The arrested duo has been identified as Saddam Salim Hawaldar, a resident of Vijay Bhavan Chawl in Saki Naka's Mohili village, and Fahad Naushad Chandiwala, a resident of Gupta Chawl in Kalina's Kolivari Gaon.According to NIA officials, they received information that a deal involving fake currency notes was underway near the Indo Saigon Industrial Estate at Marol. They laid a trap and Hawaldar and Chandiwala were duly intercepted."They were found to be in possession of 48 fake currency notes, all in the Rs 2,000 denomination. An FIR was registered against the duo on Saturday at the MIDC police station under sections 34 (common intention), 489C (possession of forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank-notes) and 489D (making or possessing instruments or materials for forging or counterfeiting currency-notes or bank-notes)," said an NIA official.The agency is now probing if the arrested duo was part of any syndicate instrumental in the preparation and circulation of fake notes. "There are several things we need to investigate. We are probing from where the notes were sourced and who their recipients were. Where the notes were printed and who have received these fake notes in the past," the official added.
