There are speculations that Bombay High Court's decision that held the Tree Authority to be illegally constituted, restraining it from granting any more permissions may impact the BDD chawl redevelopment in Worli. According to senior MHADA officials working on the redevelopment, one of their permission for tree cutting and transplanting is due with the BMC and there is a possibility that it will get delayed now.

Environmentalist, however, believe that MHADA should utilise this time to redesign the redevelopment in such a way that more trees can be saved from coming under the axe.

BDD chawl redevelopment, one of the biggest projects in Worli, will affect 625 trees, of which 253 will have to be axed and 372 will be transplanted. In July, the BMC had issued a notice with these details inviting suggestions and objections from the public. Even then there was a major hue and cry and many environmentalists had objected to it.

A senior MHADA official said, "The cutting and transplanting of tree proposal was sent to the BMC, and a few meetings in this regard were also held. Any decision like this does have an impact. However, we cannot ascertain right away how much this may delay the project, because there's a lot to be done now in Worli."

Deepender Singh Kushwaha, Chief Officer, MHADA Mumbai board, said he will have to read the order before commenting on it.

Meanwhile, environmentalist are claiming that this will surely delay the project. "The decision of cutting so many trees is flawed. I have met people privy to the project and they have told us, many of these trees can be saved."
