In 2013, the traffic police booked and fined over 4.69 lakh motorists, collecting a fine of over Rs4.10 crore.

The traffic police said that because vehicles are parked in no-parking zones, the traffic movement in these areas becomes unmanageable. “We are trying to take necessary steps to bring traffic discipline among motorists. As it is, roads are narrow and then people park vehicles illegally, slowing traffic movement,” said Pratap Dighavkar, deputy commissioner of police (traffic).

It’s a nightmare for motorists to drive on city roads, especially during peak hours. Illegal parking adds to commuters’ woes. “An increase in fines imposed could bring about a change,” said a traffic police officer, not wishing to be named.

Dighavkar added, “We will also begin our crackdown against those who conduct driving classes.

They usually park their vehicles on roads, causing inconvenience to motorists.
