The first prototype coach likely to run on Metro 2 and Metro 3 lines arrived Mumbai on Monday. This is around the same time when the newly formed Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) has called tenders for private operators to run it; thus fueling entry of private players.

On Monday, the first prototype coach of Metro Rail arrived from Bengaluru and is now parked at Bandra Kurla Complex. This blue coloured coach is manufactured by BEML. This is the precursor to the supply of 505 Metro cars by BEML to be run on these two Metro lines whose trials are expected to begin by 2020.

The car began its journey from Bengaluru on August 27 and arrived at the MMRDA exhibition grounds on September 2. "The car has been housed in a specially constructed exhibition centre at the MMRDA grounds. The external facade of this centre mimics a typical neo Mumbai Metro station", said R A Rajeev Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA.

This coach that can run for 35 years, allows people to hang bicycles in a dedicated space. It has automatic temperature control with smart lighting, automated surveillance, door opening-closing, obstacles, heat, smoke, fire detectors, real-time video surveillance and transmission

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is constructing the Andheri (E) -Dahisar (E) Metro 7 and Dahisar-DN Nagar Metro 2. Sources said that from Tuesday, the private companies interested in operating these two Metro lines can start bidding at a cost of around Rs 22 crore. "We will have a discussion with the private bidders on September 11. They will be expected to submit details by September 24," said an MMRDA official.
