Mumbaikars woke up to a hazy morning on Sunday, a day when the city's air quality index (AQI) was rated as 'Poor' at 238. The AQI is recorded by the system of air quality weather forecasting and research (SAFAR), and anything above 200 is considered poor.

Gufran Beig, project director at SAFAR, said Mumbai's AQI is unlikely to last very long, and would improve by Monday evening. "This haze and poor AQI was caused due to dust. Dust picking was reported all the way from countries like Iran and Afghanistan, and has affected the AQI of Ahmedabad and Mumbai as well," he said, adding that this was a regular phenomenon in this season. He said by Monday evening, things would normalise once again.

AQI of under 50 is categorised good, while 51-100 is satisfactory. Moderate, poor and very poor air quality are marked when AQI is recorded at 101-200, 201-300 and 301-400 respectively.

Meanwhile, as per the SAFAR portal that monitors AQI at 10 stations in Mumbai, five stations showed PM 2.5 levels — the small-sized pollutants that are known to cause respiratory illnesses and worsens health conditions of those suffering from asthma and bronchitis — at above 300, putting these five in the "very poor" category.

While the safe limit as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for PM 2.5 is 60 µg/m3 for 24 hours, the highest PM 2.5 was recorded at Bandra Kurla Complex (343), followed by Navi Mumbai (339), Andheri (318), Colaba (302) and Mazgaon (301).
