After having been unable to walk for over five years, because of a tumour in his spine, an 11-year-old boy from Kurdistani was successfully operated on in a city hospital. The patient, Goran Shakhawan, will now be able to walk properly without any support.

According to his parents, Goran was five years old when he started limping, developed scoliosis (curving of the spine sideways) and a shorter left leg. When he was taken for further medical investigations at the local hospital, a spinal cord tumour was diagnosed.

After his complex spinal microsurgery at a Mumbai-based hospital, the boy will be able to walk properly and be active, just like other kids his age. With the help of physiotherapy and rehabilitation over the next few months, his spinal deformity will be treated and he will have a swift recovery.

Due to a lack of specialised pediatric neurosurgery facilities in Kurdistan, Iraq, Goran was referred to Global Hospital, Parel for further medical treatment and surgery.

Dr. Suresh Sankhla, Head of Department-Neurosurgery at Global Hospital, who performed the surgery on Goran, said, "The patient had a large internal spinal cord tumour, which was extending along the whole length of the spinal cord — a rare condition responsible for his weak leg and scoliosis. He added, "The patient underwent surgery for removal of the tumour (under intraoperative USG and neuromonitoring guidance), and laminoplasty on June 26. He had an uneventful recovery after surgery and was discharged from the hospital after five days. He will recover soon with physiotherapy."

Goran, said, "I could walk, and perform daily activities like other children my age. But, I was disheartened as they were growing taller than me. They would walk properly, and I would limp. I always dreamt of being able to walk without a limp. I thank the hospital and my doctors for turning my dream into reality. I have been told by the doctors that within a few months, I will be able to get rid of scoliosis, stand on my feet, and live life the way I want."
