As the number of COVID-19 cases across the country is decreasing with passing days, many states and cities have decided to reopen their educational institutes for physical classes. The BMC has taken a similar decision regarding the reopening of schools in Mumbai.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recently issued a notification, which states that schools of all mediums and managements in the Mumbai region can reopen for physical classes from October 4, for the students of Classes 8 to 12.

The BMC will reopen the schools in Mumbai in phases, resuming the physical classes for students studying in higher standards first. The classes are resuming for students with strict COVID-19 guidelines in place, and no dates for the resumption of classes for junior students have been issued yet.

The official notification issued by the BMC states, “All the vaccination centres that are currently in these schools are asked to move to another location. All teachers who are working at Covid vaccination centres are asked to be released. Schools should align with the nearest health clinics either BMC run or private. The rest of the protocols given by the state government should be followed.”

The schools in Mumbai will be reopening after more than one year of closure. The educational institutes in the state were shut down in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the country. Since then, learning has completely been shifted to online platforms.

It was expected that the government of Maharashtra will reopen the educational institutes after Diwali, but the government approved the reopening of schools from October 4 itself, expediting the process. Taking into account all the schools in Mumbai, over 5.3 lakh students will be attending the offline classes in schools from next week.

Mumbai is currently witnessing around 300 to 400 COVID-19 daily cases across the city, while there are a total of 4,600 active cases in the city. A major chunk of the population in Mumbai has been vaccinated and thus, the risk of the third wave remains low for now.
