Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday launched the operations for two floating restaurants that will be anchored near Gateway of India on daily basis.
Citing that Gateway of India in south Mumbai has almost reached its saturation in terms of handling potential coastal tourism traffic, the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) has said that the 1-km-long stretch of domestic cruise terminal at Princess Dock will become the next coastal tourism hub for those visiting the city with activities like sea-side hotels, floating hotels, walkway, amphitheatre and cycling track at the domestic terminal.
With this, the MbPT also has plans to levy entry fees for visitors who want to visit the domestic cruise terminal area for experiencing facilities like that of a sea-side restaurant, amphitheatre, skating rink, cycle track that will come up at domestic cruise terminal also known as Princess ock near Bhaucha Dhakka.

However, there are plans to anchor both the floating restaurants during big events like a wedding or conference. This as the existing infrastructure at Gateway of India is not sufficient, MbPT officials said. A MbPT official said, “The plan is to slowly shift the coastal tourism traffic towards the eastern waterfront at the domestic cruise terminal.”
According to the plan, along with a domestic cruise terminal that will handle traffic for Mumbai-Goa and all domestic cruise that will be starting in the future, a 1-km-long Marina along with walkway will also come up along with a sea-side restaurant and several other facilities like cycle tracks, walkway etc.
All these facilities are expected to become reality in the next one year in order to cater to around tourists.
