Mumbai police leave for Delhi with death records of Hemant Karkare

Even as senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh maintains that he had had a conversation with slain Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare hours before his death, the Union home ministry on Saturday asked the Mumbai Crime Branch to visit New Delhi with the documents related to Hemant Karkare’s death. 

According to sources, in view of the statement made by Singh and a petition filed in a Delhi court regarding the entire issue, the Union home ministry has asked for the records pertaining to Karkare’s death. “A team from the Mumbai crime branch, headed by a police inspector, has already left for Delhi on Saturday,” the source said. 

Singh claimed Karkare had told him that he received threats from those people who opposed the Malegaon blast investigations. Singh’s statement created a sensation as this matter never came to the light ever since the 26/11 attacks took place. Karkare’s wife Kavita had also refuted this observation saying that her husband was killed by Pakistani terrorists and not by any Hindu radical organisation.   

The state government has clarified in the Assembly session that the police investigations have not revealed that Karkare was killed by any Hindu radical. But even then the Union ministry has asked for the records and findings relating to the incident.

Sources claimed that Mantralaya officials had asked Mumbai Police chief Sanjeev Dayal to provide them information regarding the same on Saturday.  

Dayal then asked a police team to leave for New Delhi. Accordingly, a team of police officers  from the Mumbai Crime Branch left for Delhi with the records and documents of the 26/11 case.
