Following Tuesday's building collapse mishap, the opposition has alleged that the repair board of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) is turning to be obsolete.

Amin Patel, Congress MLA said that the board gets Rs 100 crore as a repair fund. "This amount is released by the parent body MHADA. This amount is insufficient for the repair of 14,000 cess buildings therefore that leads to malpractices," Patel said demanding to dissolve the repair board and giving repair of cess buildings responsibility to the MHADA. "MHADA is the best body to look after its own buildings. The repair board is mired in various corruptions cases and it is purely run for the contractors now. I have met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and requested to dissolve the repair board for the larger interest of the city and its residents," Patel said.

While the incumbent party MLC Prasad Lad who was earlier chairman of Mhada has a different view. Lad told DNA that the dissolving any government body cannot be the permanent solutions. He said, "Government should carry out the reforms to plug loopholes in the system. We need the transparent process. The tender should be issued and accepted online only. Besides, the registration of the contractors has to be done. The shoddy characters have to be blacklisted and these unscrupulous contractors have been banned from participating in the repairing contract procedure. The credible and trusted people need to work with the repair board," Lad said.

Patel said that the repair board is not able to do justice to its work. "Each year several people ask for the repairing their old buildings, but the repair board sits on the applications for several years. Here, those buildings occupants are close to contractors, these buildings are only selected for the repair. The rest of the buildings have to wait for year after year for their turn. Unless the system overhauls nothing is going to happen," Patel added.
