The city witnessed a spurt in 'drink and drive' cases registered on the New Year eve as compared to last year. There were a total number of 566 cases in 2016 which increased to 615 in 2017. As per the senior Mumbai Traffic police officer, a total of 4,615 various traffic offences were registered on Sunday.

Out of the total 4,615 cases in the city, two were rash driving cases, 199 riders without helmet cases and 620 revelers were fined for illegal parking.

The traffic police department had undertaken various precautionary measures to curb the menace of drunken driving in the city. "We had started the checkpoints around 6 pm on New Year's eve so that people will be aware of police presence," said a senior traffic police official.

He added, "The number of cases has gone up as they had set up extra checkpoints this year on strategic locations to catch the offenders. The total traffic-related offenses compared to the last year has gone up from 3,190 to 4,615 cases."

"We had resorted intensive checking for 'drink-and-drive' cases since afternoon and checked around 4,000 vehicles. We have issued e-challans to over 7,600 motorists for overspending using the newly Automatic Number Plate Recognition speed cameras," said Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic).

In the adjoining Thane city, too, police cracked the whip on traffic offenders. They took action against 1,327 motorists for drunken driving on New Year's Eve.The drunk drivers were booked under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
